SPA (Speaking in Public Anxiety) Program

Do you have a fear of speaking in public? Most people get anxious at the thought of delivering a speech. This is normal and techniques for reducing your anxiety will be addressed in the "The Introduction to Public Speaking Course" (SPC 2600).

If, on the other hand, your fear of public speaking is so severe that it keeps you from taking certain classes that have a speaking requirement, or from running for elected positions because you are too afraid to give a speech, then the new SPA Program is for you. If you have already taken SPC 2600 or ORI 3000 you are not eligible to take this course.

The SPA Program is a 1 credit S/U class that covers: the types and causes of CA (communication anxiety), practices various treatment methods to reduce CA, and allows students to present a few speeches to a small audience. This class meets for five weeks, for three hours each week, to achieve maximum results. Thus, rather than meet once a week for 15 weeks, a student is required to meet 15 times in five weeks Dedication and willingness to work and try new techniques is a must!
